Notice the two European cities in the bottom left corner. Despite comparably lower densities than the other European cities, their transportation energy consumption are near the bottom of the European pack. They are outliers, mysteriously energy efficient cities that buck the otherwise tightly correlated trend.  They are: Copenhagen and Amsterdam, two cities that possess the highest rates of bicycle trips in the world. I do not believe for one moment that this is a coincidence.
